Collecting Memories

When people ask me if I am a doll collector, my answer has always been no. But during a recent stint of housecleaning dedicated to bringing the clutter of my life under control, I realized I had collected more dolls than I thought.

In a basket beside my dressing table, I came upon the baby doll given to me by my doting grandmother on the day I was born. Sadly, the doll had been put away during all the years of my childhood because it was thought she was too fragile to play with. Today, her dear face and faded silk bonnet remind me of the grandmother I adored.

In a closet, I came upon a box of family movies capturing the Christmas mornings of my childhood. I didn't have to look at them because tucked in my heart is a vivid memory of the time my two sisters and I got baby dolls from Santa. Each doll came with a full layette in matching colors so there would be no mix-up under the tree. The clothes for my baby had been trimmed in blue with ribbons and embroidered bowknots patiently sewn by my mother, grandmother, and aunt during long autumn evenings after my sisters and I had gone to bed.

In my top dresser drawer, I found a small, tattered rag doll with a beguiling face. I bought it years ago in an antique store in Vermont, simply because I delighted in some little girl's cherished childhood treasure, crafted lovingly out of scraps from her mama's mending basket.
In my jewelry box, I came upon a miniature doll that fits in the palm of my hand, a gift from my sister Barbara more than a decade ago as a token of good luck when I set out to build the dream that became Pleasant Company. Never could the two of us have imagined back then just how much luck that tiny talisman would bring!

And then I tackled the little-used sleeping loft where I found there was, indeed, a small collection of dolls the first American Girls, Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly-with their trunks and beds,

their books and clothes. The loft had been named "the plateau" by my goddaughter, Teal, who came there years ago with her friends for overnights with the American Girls.

Of course, when my housecleaning frenzy was over and the clutter organized and packed away, the dolls remained next to my dressing table, in the jewelry box, and on "the plateau." I want them there as tender reminders of memories I cherish of people, places, and moments that I love. Am I a doll collector? No, not really. But I would never part with the memories these dolls hold for me.

If the dolls we make at Pleasant Company and the books and treasures we create have given you and your American girl even one moment as memorable as my own, then our labors have been repaid a hundredfold. Memories made in childhood and taken forward into our lives warm us for all our days. They leave an indelible mark on our spirit. When it comes to memories, we are all collectors.

MEET FELICITY

In Meet Felicity, the first of six books in her series, you'll meet Felicity Merriman, a spunky, spritely colonial girl growing up in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1774. Felicity grows impatient doing "sitting down kinds of things" colonial girls were expected to do. She'd much rather be riding her beloved horse, Penny! Felicity's strong-willed struggle for independence matches America's own feisty fight for freedom at the time of the American Revolution.

Felicity Doll & Book

Your Felicity doll has snappy green eyes that open and close, and silky red hair that curls in soft tendrils around her face. Brush her long wavy hair and gather it with an ivory satin ribbon. She has a huggable, soft body with head, arms, and legs you can pose. She can sit, stand, and hold the charming accessories in her collection.

Felicity comes dressed in a flower-striped gown edged in ruffles. Underpants were not worn in 1774, but under the gown there is a simple shift. She wears white wool stockings and black shoes with fancy buckles. Her shoes are "single-lasted," which

means they are just alike and will fit

on either foot. In colonial

times people switched

their shoes

from one foot to

the other so they would wear evenly!! Your Felicity doll comes, as shown here, with a Meet Felicity book.

In Felicity Learns a Lesson, Felicity is sent to Miss Manderly's house to learn to be a polite gentlewoman: She practices elegant penmanship, fancy stitchery, formal dancing, and the proper way to serve tea. Two sisters from England join the lessons. One, Elizabeth, becomes Felicity's best friend. When Felicity's father decides that the king's tax on tea is unfair, he refuses to sell tea in his store or to drink it in their household. How can Felicity continue the tea lessons she loves and be loyal to her father?

Tea Lesson

Here's everything Felicity needs to practice the proper tea ceremony. Tea leaves were stored in the wooden tea caddy. Felicity's dark blue teacup and saucer have an elegant fruit pattern on them. There is no handle on the small china teacup, which came from China back then. Put the spoon on the saucer, her cotton napkin in her lap, and pass her a queen cake. Just be sure her loose tooth doesn't fall out when she takes a bite. How embarrassing! ESAL $22

Reading & Writing Lesson

Mother taught Felicity to read the alphabet and the Lord's Prayer using the wooden hornbook. Her writing supplies include a quill pen, which she dipped in an inkwell that came from

Holland. Felicity sewed paper together to make her copybook, used to practice writing properly. And when she got bored, she drew pictures of her horse, Penny! Pretend the shiny sander is filled with "pounce" to sprinkle on her writing and dry up the ink blots. ESAB $18
In Felicity's Surprise, an invitation to a dancing lesson at the elegant Governor's Palace is the most wonderful honor Felicity can imagine. Mother promises to make a beautiful gown for her, just like the one on the fashion doll at the milliner's shop. As the event nears, Mother becomes dreadfully ill. Felicity spends all her days caring for her, sadly accepting that there will be no chance to go to the Palace- until a glorious surprise reminds her that Christmas- tide is the season when dreams do come true.

Christmas Gown & Stomacher

This brilliant blue taffeta gown is the one Felicity dreamed of wearing to the Governor's Palace. It's trimmed with blue satin pleating and dainty lace on the sleeves and bodice. Since colonial girls had few clothes, they often freshened up a dress with a new stomacher.
Felicity's stomacher has pink ribbons and pearls on it and snaps into the bodice of her gown, creating a new style. The pearl necklace, blue satin hair ribbon, and dainty pinner cap complete the outfit. ECO $22

Invitation & Fashion Doll

Noah's Ark

One special toy was stored away to be brought out only at Christmastide in the Merriman household. Noah's ark with its little figures was Felicity's favorite. Open the ark to safely stow the animals inside. Noah and his wife fit snugly in the house on top! ECAP $20

Shrewsbury Cakes

Make colonial Christmas cookies just like Felicity did. An authentic recipe for Shrewsbury cakes is included in this kit. After you've cut out the cakes with four fancy cutters, unwrap blue paper the from the sugar loaf and scrape sugar on top of them. Put the tea cloth in the basket and then tuck in the tasty cakes, warm from the oven. Felicity can take them to Miss Manderly's for tea-if you haven't eaten all of them first! ECAG $18

In Happy Birthday, Felicity!, Grandfather arrives, bringing precious gifts for Felicity's birthday on April 21st-a new baby lamb and a fine guitar that belonged to her grandmother. Plantation Play

Felicity loved the long summer days on Grandfather's plantation. She played shuttlecock and battledore with Nan and William and blew bubbles at the river's edge with a shell and reed. Before the American wagon train arrives, Josefina meets a friendly scout named Patrick. When Papá trusts Patrick with the family's trade, Josefina decides to trust him with a trade of her own. But Patrick leaves town without paying Papá or Josefina! It seems he's betrayed them both-until, late one night, Josefina makes a surprising discovery! Can she use it to save the day?

Josefina could hardly wait to get her first look at American traders and the things they had to sell. Dress her for the trip to Santa Fe in a ruffled calico riding dress and tooled- leather vest. *Santa Fe Summer Fun

Josefina's summer was certainly full of surprises. As she played her clay flute one sunny day, she summoned a startling bird indeed-an American scout named Patrick! He showed Josefina something magical-a telescope that made faraway objects leap into view. Take your telescope out of its purple pouch and let Josefina take a peek-it really works! In the plaza at Santa Fe, Josefina saw the U.S. flag for the first time. Its stars and stripes of red, white, and blue were so different from the Mexican flag she was used to. A shiny metal mirror brought by American traders also caught Josefina's eye. But it was a desert tortoise that led Josefina to the biggest surprise of all! JAAN $18

*English Square Piano No wonder Tía Dolores insisted on bringing her piano with her all the way from Mexico City-it was a beauty! You can help Josefina play this wonderful wooden reproduction. Lift the lid to reveal working keys, and use the sheet music to serenade Josefina with the melody to Home Sweet Home. JP $120 Cannot be gift-wrapped.

Sarape & Hat

New Mexican winters could be very cold, when the sharp winds blew down from the mountains. Slip Josefina's sarape (sah-RAH- peh) over her head so she'll stay toasty warm. Its distinctive design is similar to the highly valued Saltillo sarapes of Josefina's day. Top it off with a wide-brimmed black hat, and adjust the chin strap so it won't blow away! JWO $22

Adobe Oven & Bread Set Josefina's family did their baking outdoors

in an horno (OR-no), an adobe oven shaped like a beehive. To bake bread, Josefina had to start a fire in the horno with a bundle of twigs. Then she opened the horno door, scraped out the hot coals, set a tuft of wool on a wooden paddle, and held it inside. If the wool turned brown, she knew the oven was hot enough for baking! Your horno set includes two loaves of bread-one unbaked and one golden brown. JWAO $20

Josefina's Winter Wear Josefina and her sisters knit thick socks to wear in winter and wore an extra petticoat beneath their skirts for added warmth. Hang the leather pouch, or guadameco, around Josefina's neck so it's close to her heart. There's a special letter from Papá tucked inside! JWOA $10

Cocina Supplies

Josefina loved the cheerful bustle of the cocina, the kitchen. Help her grind corn with the mano and metate, or grinding stones. Fill her jar with water and set it on the braided ring. Use the gourd dipper to offer Josefina a drink. The chiles in the coiled basket and the stick strung with dried squash, garlic, and corn will make a tasty meal-you can almost smell a spicy stew bubbling in the copper pot on its trivet! JWAB $24

Momma packed Addy's lunch in a tin pail with a lid on top to keep it fresh. She tied a scrap of dotted fabric to the handle so Addy would know which lunch was hers. Spread out the cheery red-checked napkin and lay out Addy's lunch. There's a savory meat pie, a bunch of juicy grapes, and four little cookies shaped into letters that spell out a sweet message! Satchel & Supplies

Addy's striped satchel holds everything you'll need to help her study her school subjects. Her Union Reader is a miniature version of a real schoolbook used in Northern schools in the 1860s. If you have good eyes, you can really read it! Addy learned to write with a slate pencil and a big double slate. The yarn binding around the slate's edges kept it from scraping against her desktop and disturbing her desk partner. Addy used a wooden abacus, or "numeral frame," to learn arithmetic. Slide the little beads back and forth to help her add and subtract. ASAB $18

Molly Doll & Book

Your Molly doll has soft gray eyes that wink and blink behind her shiny glasses. Her thick pigtails are fun to braid and tie with ribbons, or you can let them out and brush her long wavy hair. Molly is soft and huggable with arms and legs that move so you can have her sit, stand, and hold the accessories you collect for her.

Molly wears a sporty outfit featuring up a navy blue sweater with a stylish green and red argyle pattern. Push the sleeves as she would have back in 1944.

Under her sweater Molly wears a dickey-a removable collar trimmed in blue rickrack. Her navy blue wool skirt flares smartly. Red hairbows, white anklets, and black Mary Jane shoes finish the outfit.

Your Molly doll comes, as shown above, with a Meet Molly book.
